The Medical College of Georgia's Department of Ophthalmology at Augusta University is seeking a full-time faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor ready to join a busy, established faculty practice in Augusta, Georgia. The selected candidate will be board certified and serve as Director of the Department's Residency Program. This full time, annual year assistant professor position combines rigorous clinical and surgical care, dedication to graduate medical education (GME) leadership, and institutional service. This is a 12-month appointment balancing clinical practice with administrative service time. Together with colleagues, the candidate will be responsible for the overall clinical care of adults and children charged with inpatient and outpatient as well be an active participant in the on-call schedule.
Given the vision and mission of the Medical College of Georgia and the academic level of the department, the candidate should also have an interest in research and a personal career development plan that is expected to be pursued vigorously after appointment. The ideal candidate will be committed to cultivating an academic practice with involvement in resident teaching and clinical and/or basic science research.
The ideal candidate must demonstrate a commitment to patient care and enthusiasm for creating a comprehensive learning and working environment. Responsibilities
The Primary Program Director Responsibilities will be:
Program Leadership
-Direct all aspects of the residency program, including strategic planning and continuous improvement
-Ensure compliance with ACGME accreditation requirements and institutional policies
-Serve as the primary liaison to institutional GME leadership
Education and Curriculum
-Develop and oversee a comprehensive competency-based curriculum
-Ensure robust exposure across all ophthalmic sub-specialties
-Advance innovation in surgical training, simulation and didactics
Resident Recruitment and Development
-Lead recruitment and selection of residents
-Oversee resident evaluation, mentorship and progression
-Promote an equitable and supportive training environment
Faculty Engagement
-Recruit and develop faculty educators
-Foster a culture of academic excellence, mentorship, and scholarship
Clinical and Academic Contributions
-Maintain an active clinical practice
-Support and expand research and scholarly activity within the program
Required Qualifications
  • MD or DO degree (or foreign equivalent)
  • Board Certified/Board Eligible in Ophthalmology
  • Medical licensure in Georgia
  • Minimum 3 years of educational or administrative experience
  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical care and teaching

Assistant Professor- Early level career as a faculty member with appropriate post graduate training.
Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
- Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
- Evidence of ability as a teacher;
- Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
- Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
- Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.
The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.
Assistant Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
