Job Description

The Department of Biology at Université Laval is seeking applications for a tenure-track faculty position in molecular biology, cell biology, or genetics. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent, externally-funded research program in molecular biology, cell biology, or genetics and to contribute to the recruitment and training of graduate students. In addition, the candidate will be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels in molecular biology, cell biology, or genetics.
The Department of Biology at Université Laval is a premier center for education and research covering the fundamental fields of biology, ranging from cellular and molecular biology to genomics, physiology, animal ecology, marine ecology, freshwater ecology, plant ecology, conservation, and evolution. The Department is composed of a team of 22 faculty members who supervise 570 students, including 135 graduate students. The Department of Biology is a leader in northern research with recognized centers of excellence in non-human genomics, ecology and evolution, and oceanography. This research is supported by major infrastructure at Université Laval, including the Institute of Integrative Biology and Systems (featuring platforms for microscopy—fluorescence, confocal, and electron—genomic analysis, and bioinformatics), the scientific complex of the Institut nordique du Québec and the 11 research stations of the Centre for Northern Studies in Nunavik and Nunavut, as well as the research icebreaker NGCC Amundsen.

Position description
1. Teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels in cell biology, molecular biology, or genetics;
2. Development of an independent and externally-funded research program in molecular biology, cell biology, or genetics;
3. Participation in the educational and administrative activities of the Department of Biology, the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and Université Laval;
4. Participation in external academic activities that contribute to the university’s reputation

Selection criteria
• Hold a Ph.D. in biology or a discipline relevant to the field of molecular biology, cell biology, or genetics. Postdoctoral experience is desirable;
• Proven ability to conduct academic research, demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals in the relevant research field;
• Potential to develop independent and original research in molecular biology, cell biology, or genetics;
• Demonstrated aptitude or potential for university teaching at all three levels, for supervising graduate students, and for pedagogical innovation;
• Ability to communicate and integrate into the institution’s French-speaking environment (within two years);
• Alignment of professional potential with the key competencies required for the professorial role:
- Analytical skills, ability to synthesize information, and sound judgment;
- Creativity and innovation;
- Communication skills;
