The Medical College of Georgia Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy is dedicated to understanding cellular function through state-of-the art research in areas such as autophagy and apoptosis, bone metabolism, developmental biology, molecular motors, dysphagia/swallowing disorders, exosome biology, renal disease, stem cell research, vision science (retina and cornea), and cell wounding. Our department is dedicated to understanding cellular function through state-of-the art research in areas such as autophagy and apoptosis, bone metabolism, developmental biology, molecular motors, dysphagia/swallowing disorders, exosome biology, renal disease, stem cell research, vision science (retina and cornea), and cell wounding. The Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy has as its core mission the advancement of outstanding research and education. We work collaboratively to discover new knowledge through innovative biomedical research, to transmit that knowledge to students, and to train future researchers, educators, and health care professionals.
Job Summary
Assist in designing experiments utilizing primary and secondary antibody labeling at the EM level, manage execution of these experiments making certain all federal/state and state regulation guidelines are clearly followed. Responsible for training and supervision of faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and technical staff in the use of both transmission and scanning electron microscopes, laboratory protocols; especially tissue preparation for immunogold and other approaches that reveal molecular structure with EM, data analysis, record maintenance and statistics. Coordination and collaboration in research. Responsible for routine maintenance of transmission and scanning electron microscopes and laboratory safety as it relates to immunocytochemistry. Perform routine sample preparation for TEM and SEM. Perform serial, immuno, and routine transmission electron microscopic photography utilizing sophisticated Gatan digital imaging software. Act as a representative of Augusta University for the EM/Histology Core. Collaborate with AU faculty and various other outside facilities and institutions with experiments related to electron microscopy (transmission and scanning).
Responsibilities
Responsibilities to include, but are not limited to:
Consult with and assist investigators with the design of protocols to meet their transmission and scanning electron microscope (EM) needs including routine ultrastructural analysis and immunolocalization of strategic molecules at the EM level. In conjunction with other EM core staff, plan and execute techniques for routine transmission EM, immuno EM and scanning EM, and Perform serial, immuno and routine transmission electron microscopic photography utilizing sophisticated Gatan digital imaging software for approximately 50 AU faculty and several off campus universities and commercial facilities. Perform Scanning Electron microscopic photography, SEM sample preparation, critical point drying, and sputter coating.
Maintain complex laboratory equipment including electron microscopes, digital cameras, and computer systems. Prepare and revise documentation related to laboratory specimen cataloging. Assist facility users by providing written methods and other relevant material for inclusion in grant applications.
Assign, edit, and complete requests in iLab software.
Perform all other related duties/tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. from an accredited college or university with a minimum of one year of experience in research, basic science, or clinical laboratory particularly clinical trial research; previous supervisory experience.
OR
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, or other natural, life, health care, or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned with a minimum of five years of experience in research, basic science, or clinical laboratory particularly clinical trial research; previous supervisory experience.
OR
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, or other natural, life, health care, or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned with a minimum of eight years of experience in research, basic science, or clinical laboratory particularly clinical trial research; previous supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrate expertise in Cellular Biology and Histology, with skilled knowledge of human anatomical systems, as well as tissue preparation techniques, and ultrastructural analysis.
Over three years of hands-on experience in a research laboratory environment, performing complex experiments and maintaining accurate documentation.
Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience with Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and advanced digital imaging software.
Proven management and supervisory skills, including training and mentoring staff and students.
Strong understanding of biochemical assays, cellular metabolism, and laboratory test practices.
Expertise in chemical preparation and adherence to proper disposal protocols for laboratory safety.

Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Detail-oriented with strong organizational and critical thinking skills.
ABILITIES

Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Salary: $62,300-$79,400 annually.
Pay Band: B12
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
This position is (fully/partially) funded through external sources. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of these funds.
