Job Description
Summary
Position for student to assist researchers with day to day tasks and gain experience in the research environment. Will work under the direct supervision of a senior lab member or the PI. The work does not involve hazardous materials, animal, or human research.
The Laboratory Helper will assist with a variety of basic research tasks ranging from data processing to (non hazardous) specimen preparation under supervision of a PhD student or faculty in the lab. Activities will be diverse, to expose the employee to a variety of lab activities, while improving the productivity of the students in the lab. This will require use of lab-specific software tools running on Linux workstations and a variety of lab-specifc specimen preparation methods. The employee will be trained in-house on the relevant methods and past experience is not required, beyond a basic undergraduate science education.
There is a considerable amount of imaging data in the lab which requires manual analysis. The employee will learn the relevant analysis methods then apply them to large data sets, a very human-intensive task, to improve the productivity of the students in the lab. The employee will also assist with preparing specimens for imaging on electron microscopes after learning how to prepare specimen grids using lab-specific protocols.
This position is temporary and the duration will last until the first week of August 2026.
Job Duties
- Basic (non-health) image data processing under supervision of a graduate student or faculty
- Basic (non-hazardous) specimen preparation for imaging experiments under supervision of a graduate student or faculty
- Other simple laboratory research tasks as required to improve lab efficiency
- Employee will be trained in house in any skills needed for the work above
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- No experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Undergraduate training in the biological or chemical sciences preferable.
