Job Description

The Laboratory Assistant processes, distributes, and provides quality assurance for patient specimens. Loads Hematology and Chemistry analyzers, working with Hematology, Lab control, and Chemistry staff to ensure timely distribution of specimens to the appropriate technical section. Supplies accurate information to providers and other clinical staff regarding laboratory testing, test requirements, and patient results when required.

The hours for this position is 9:00 am - 5:30 pm Monday - Friday. This position is fully on site.

  • May receive patient specimens from within the Institute and outside Institutions
  • Follows laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Works effectively with other center staff to ensure timely management of specimens.
  • Updates database when samples are banked or retrieved.
  • May participate in instrument supply loading in addition to specimen loading, under the guidance of technical staff.
  • Maintains competence in all performed duties; attends all required safety/infection control/departmental sessions, participates in continuing education.
  • Complies with all policies regarding the confidentiality of patient information and the lawful use of any computerized patient data.
  • Processes requests for research samples and assists with the distribution and shipment of samples to investigators.
  • Performs cleaning and quality checks on biological safety cabinets, CO2 incubators, centrifuges, and other instruments as needed.
  • Must be able to work with stacks/samples stored in liquid nitrogen (LN2) tanks for prolong periods of time. Must be able to lift stacks of frozen samples above waist height, which requires pulling the top of the stacks above head height.
  • Monitors and changes the LN2 dewars to maintain the LN2 levels in the LN2 tanks.
  • Handles dry ice and shipping distribution of models
  • May carry out special assignments, such as mycoplasma testing.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:Â

  • High school diploma required.Â
  • 2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory or health care institution required.

Preferred Qualifications:Â

  • Associate Degree or Bachelor’s of Science Degree in a healthcare specialty or laboratory science preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Basic knowledge of laboratory/medical terminology.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to learn quickly and work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Capacity to remain flexible and multi-task is key.

Pay Transparency Statement

The hiring range is based on market pay structures, with individual salaries determined by factors such as business needs, market conditions, internal equity, and based on the candidate’s relevant experience, skills and qualifications.
