Job Description

Summary

The Program in Population and Environmental Health Disparities (PiPEHD) is seeking a Research Technician II to support biospecimen receipt, processing, and storage activities. This role is part of a large, multi-site epidemiological study and includes responsibilities such as receiving and fractionating biospecimens, storage of biospecimens, performing data entry and documentation, coordinating sample shipments, managing inventory, and completing other related tasks as needed. The technician will have strong communication and organizational skills, with a keen attention to detail.

Job Duties

  • Receives biological specimens from clinics after which they are inventoried, processed, and stored according to existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintains accurate documentation and tracks samples using relevant databases.
  • Prepares samples for analysis or shipment and assists in generating appropriate documentation for sample transfers.
  • Troubleshoots problematic results, maintains and operates equipment, and maintains a safe and sanitary workstation.
  • Maintains and organizes inventory of equipment, supplies, and reagents.
  • Collaborates closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and other team members to ensure timely and efficient completion of all tasks.
  • Attends weekly meetings with laboratory, clinical coordinators, senior staff, and Principal Investigators to ensure all tasks stay on track and address any issues that may arise.
  • Receives biological specimens such as blood, urine, placentas, and stool, from the field team after which they are processed, aliquoted, and stored according to existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Receives biological specimens such as hair and saliva after which they are stored according to existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintains and tracks samples using relevant databases such as REDCap, BioTrack and OpenSpecimen.
  • Works with the Principal Investigators or other senior research staff to update or establishes new site specific standard operating procedures.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Walks up to 0.5 miles to on-site campus locations, that includes but not limited to Baylor College of Medicine facilities, Texas Children's Hospital complex, and other Texas Medical Center buildings to obtain research samples.
  • One year of work experience in a basic science research laboratory.
  • Works independently and is a good team player.
  • Be flexible with change, organized with strong communication skills, attentive to details and comprehensive documentation, and has good multi-tasking skills.
  • Has proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
