Summary

The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (GHN) at Texas Children's Hospital (TCH) is developing a team of close-knit Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) Physician Assistants at the Texas Medical Center campus to be part of a dynamic and collaborative multidisciplinary medical team who will care for hospitalized patients with a variety of gastrointestinal and liver disorders.

This position offers unique experience on our in-patient service lines for an individual who wishes to pursue a career in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition, build relationships with patients/families and be immersed in a highly educational environment with frequent opportunities to attend research lectures, pathology conferences, and obtain CME through GI grand rounds and fellows workshops. The Division of GHN at TCH is currently ranked the #5 program in the country by US News and World Report and its faculty are internationally recognized clinical experts and researchers. As the largest children's hospital in the country, TCH is a major quaternary referral center for some of the most rare GI and liver disorders, allowing for unparalleled development of pediatric GI and hepatology expertise.

Currently, three gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition in-patient service lines care for 20 - 35 patients per day with a wide range of gastrointestinal, liver, and nutritional disorders including but not limited to: inflammatory bowel disease, short bowel syndrome/ intestinal failure, gastrointestinal motility disorders, liver transplantation, and pancreas and bile duct abnormalities. Management of nutritional support in the form of enteral tube feeding and parenteral nutrition is also provided. The service line also performs a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. The physician assistant/ instructor will work alongside faculty colleagues, pediatric gastroenterology and transplant hepatology fellows, pharmacists, dieticians, social workers and pediatric residents to care for this pediatric patient population in both the acute care and ICU settings. We seek individuals who are organized and detail-oriented and can work well with staff and faculty from different departments to coordinate outstanding patient care.

Job Duties

  • Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations and perform clinical consultations
  • Order and interpret diagnostic procedures in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
  • Prescribe appropriate pharmacological, non-pharmacological and nutritional treatments.
  • Maintain records and write orders and progress notes in patient charts as to status, treatments, and procedures.
  • Monitor and ensure accuracy of patient medical records.
  • Provide follow-up health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols established with the supervising physician.
  • Communicate with physicians, patients, and the family members of patients concerning patient care.
  • Collaborate with subspecialists and ancillary staff in care coordination and discharge planning.
  • Day-to-day care of children with acute and chronic illness requiring hospitalization.
  • Taking an active role in education of trainees when present.
  • Liaise and collaborate with stakeholders and consultants throughout Texas Children's

Minimum Qualifications

  • For Nurse Practitioner: Master's degree in in Nursing.
  • For Physician Assistant: Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies. NOTE: Bachelor's degree in Physician Assistant Studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation.

Certification/Licenses/Registration:

  • For Nurse Practitioner: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN-NP), and specialty certification as required by department.
  • For Physician Assistant: Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board. Specialty certification is required by department.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
