Summary

The Center of Excellence for Robotic Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking an early-career PhD investigator at the rank of assistant professor or above who has training in data science that is applicable to cardiothoracic transplant research. The investigator will provide data analysis and have a major role in the development and implementation of advanced analytic tools in a multidisciplinary team to design, develop, and create analytical solutions through applications of data mining, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), and emerging technologies. The investigator will join our new center and will have access to surgical data from Baylor St. Luke’s and Texas Heart Institute.

The investigator will be is responsible for evaluating data quality, preparing data, generating insights, and developing and presenting high-impact data stories for quality improvement and other research projects using surgical data to improve cardiothoracic transplant research; collaborating with faculty and residents to disseminate these findings through intramural and extramural research efforts; developing grant proposals; and mentoring trainees.

Job Duties

  • Build and test statistical, optimization, and machine learning models, including regression, classification, clustering, natural language processing, deep learning, and/or statistical modeling using surgical data.
  • Develop algorithms and predictive models to solve critical business problems in cardiothoracic transplant.
  • Provide statistical and advanced analytics expertise to develop plans for surgical research projects.
  • Work with cardiothoracic transplant faculty and residents and other collaborators on data preparation, feature engineering, and model development choices to organize and deliver high quality care, prevent errors in surgical care and implement safer and more efficient surgical care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Required Education and Experience: Ph.D. in mathematics, computer science, statistics, engineering, or analytics is required in addition to 2 years of healthcare industry experience.
  • Successful track record of collaboration with clinical investigators and in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Successful track record of training students and postdoctoral fellows
  • Accomplished academic record sufficient to fulfill criteria for an assistant professor level faculty appointment at Baylor College of Medicine.
