Overview
Saint Mary's College seeks to hire a per-course adjunct faculty member to teach the elective course KINES 605: Philosophical Basis of Kinesiology in the Graduate Kinesiology Program in Spring 2025. Tuesdays, 6:00-9:00pm.
The Master of Arts in Kinesiology program at Saint Mary's College focuses on the study of human beings engaged in physical activity. It is designed to ensure that graduate students are exposed to the breadth and depth of classical and contemporary knowledge in the component areas of the field while taking advantage of the finest things about Saint Mary's College (e.g., an interest in the student as a person and an emphasis on shared inquiry and critical thinking). Students select a concentration that fits best with their personal and professional goals: Sport Studies, Sport Management, or Fitness Management, and typically complete the program in 14 to 26 months.

Course Description
KIN 605 - Philosophical Basis of Kinesiology Course Description:
This course is an introduction to the basic foundations of philosophy as they relate to the sport and physical activity domain. The course is designed to promote an understanding of the nature of philosophy and the major schools of philosophical thought. Topics include: The importance of philosophy to physical education and athletics; various teaching and coaching philosophies; ethical issues in sport and physical activity (e.g. drug use); and close examinations of contemporary social issues associated with race, ethnicity, and gender.
Student Learning Objectives:
1. Examine how cultural ideas about/toward bodies changed or remained the same across historical time periods.
2. Analyze how identity (based on race, ethnicity, gender, size) informs cultural ideas about bodies, especially as those bodies move.
3. Identify examples when individuals or groups have resisted or challenged dominant cultural ideas about their bodies.
4. Identify and develop one's own life philosophy and philosophy regarding moving bodies.
5. Identify one's vision for a “good life”, including how making ethical decisions as a professional will play a part in it.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree or higher in Kinesiology or related field.
- Minimum of 2 years teaching in higher education in Kinesiology or related field.
Candidates must reside in California.
Salary: $7,447-$10,308 dependent on qualifications. The salary range for this position is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here.
