College/Department Information
The Department of Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine is charged with conducting high-impact original biomedical research and translating the findings to clinical applications, and in educating future physicians and researchers. Our research addresses fundamental questions in cell and developmental biology, endocrinology, neuroscience, regenerative medicine. Collaborations have been established with clinical departments for studies that investigate various diseases including neurological diseases (stroke, epilepsy, muscular dystrophy, and Guillain-Barre syndrome); psychiatric disorders (schizophrenia, depression and autism); degenerative diseases (osteoporosis); cancer and endocrinological disorders.

Deak lab is searching for a motivated researcher, who will take care of our research animals (mice) in a part-time position. Job requires 18 hours per week in the laboratory with flexible schedule. Good animal handling skills and eagerness to learn PCR genotyping and behavioral assays are required.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
  • He/She will provide essential assistance to Dr. Deak on routine tasks in the new laboratory in DNRM, and will be the main responsible person to maintain the mouse colony.
  • Participate in project planning and development of research protocols while insuring adherence to accepted scientific research principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines.
  • Perform immunohistochemistry, PCR, real time PCR, western blotting, tissue culture, brain surgeries, behavioral testing and microscopic analysis.
  • Inspecting animal cages, genotyping, breeding mouse colonies and conducting animal studies including learning and memory assays in mice. Will analyze results, interpret data and confer with PI on research plans.
  • Perform all other related duties/tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in research, basic science or a clinical setting particularly clinical trials research; OR Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' experience in research, basic science or a clinical setting particularly clinical trials research.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience with cell biology, molecular biology and animal behavioral assays is a plus.

Ability to complete work and meet deadlines
Willingness and ability to work with research animals
Detail-oriented with the ability to maintain confidentiality
Ability to work independently with only general supervision
Strong organizational, prioritization and time management skills
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
Candidate should be willing to learn genotyping, PCR reactions and how to prepare primary cell cultures.
Expertise with Windows Office is a plus.
Basic computer skills and proficient in spoken and written English is a must; we use Microsoft Office in the lab. Proficient in Microsoft Word and other computer software/databases or willingness to learn.
