Job Description
Summary
Participate as a CCM Small Animal Surgical Support (SASS) team member to provide research support services to investigators on a fee for service basis. Primary responsibilities include performing rodent surgical procedures, providing post-operative care and assessment for rodent surgical patients, maintaining the CCM controlled substance program, as well as participating in all other aspects of the health and welfare of laboratory animals, including daily monitoring and treatment, maintaining accurate health records, and providing requested technical services which includes inducing and monitoring anesthesia for multiple species.
Job Duties
- Performs rodent surgical procedures such as, but not limited to, vasectomies, castrations, and ovariectomies.
- Provides pre, peri and post-operative care including, but not limited to animal transport, shaving and skin preparation, administration of anesthesia and analgesia, intubation, bandaging, documentation, or any other treatment as directed by the veterinarian.
- Performs veterinary procedures such as, but not limited to, blood collection, parenteral and oral administration of materials, animal restraint, anesthesia, tissue collection, etc.
- Provides skilled technical assistance in animal research methodologies in current and pending projects.
- Identifies and clearly communicates all health problems to veterinarians in oral or written form.
- Conducts daily observational rounds and health checks.
- Accurately maintains both written and electronic animal treatment records.
- Assists investigators with appropriate anesthetics and treatments for research animals, and educate researchers in the following topics: handling, rodent anesthesia, post-op monitoring, and aseptic technique.
- Participate in inventory checks to ensure are drugs and supplies are in date and available when needed.
- Participates in specific technical services provided by CCM.
- Maintains veterinary technical equipment such as gas anesthesia machines, and digital radiography in proper working order.
- Maintain the CCM Controlled Substance Program under supervision of a CCM veterinarian.
- Review, approve, or decline controlled substance requests. Maintain controlled substance database and logs.
- Distribute controlled substances, per request, during specified office hours.
- Participate in weekly and semiannual controlled substance inventory review.
- Oversight and maintenance of CCM rodent surgery suites. Cleans, prepares, packs, and sterilizes surgical instruments/equipment.
- Participates in the management and maintenance of CCM veterinary drugs and supplies.
- Performs daily rounds on rodent surgical patients to ensure well-being and maintain regulatory compliance.
- Other standard veterinary technician duties
- Working within animal housing environments may include strong odors and allergens.
- Alternating weekend and holiday work is required.
- This position is considered essential personnel which may require work during emergency situations (hurricanes, floods, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications
- Associate's degree in a related field. Two years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
- Two years of relevant experience.
- Certified Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
Preferred Qualifications
- Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT).
