The Department of Social Sciences in the Katherine Reese Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Augusta University is seeking to fill a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor anticipated to begin August 2025. We seek individuals who can teach courses in the Master of Arts in Intelligence and Security Studies (MAISS) program. Applicants must implement an active research agenda in Security Studies. Candidates should demonstrate potential for excellence in research, including writing and securing grants, and a strong commitment to teaching, including an interest in online instruction. Responsibilities
- Teach courses in the Master of Arts in Intelligence and Security Studies (MAISS) program as assigned by Department Chair either in-person or online related to ethnic conflict; causes of war; international security; terrorism studies; and/or grand strategy
- Implement an active research agenda in Security Studies.
- Participate in the shared governance of the department, college, university, and the social work profession
Required Qualifications
PhD in Political Science/International Relations/Security Studies/Intelligence Studies and/or a broad concentration in security, national defense, and conflict.
Established record or demonstrated potential for high-quality, original scholarship that is appropriate to the discipline and shows promise of continuation.
Assistant Professor- Terminal degree (or nearing its completion), or its equivalent in training, ability, and/or experience.
Associate Professor- Terminal degree or its equivalent in training, ability, and/or experience; completion of at least five years as an Assistant Professor.
Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
- Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
- Evidence of ability as a teacher;
- Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
- Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
- Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Have experience or willingness to research and teach international security, the causes of warfare, grand strategy, ethnic conflict, and/or terrorism studies
- Experience with national defense and policy/strategy/theory
- Experience with research methods, data analytics, and/or machine-learning
- Experience with social-media analysis
- Experience teaching in person and online
- Grant writing experience or potential/willingness for grant writing.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
This position is academic year based and typically works August through May, depending on dates outlined in offer letter and yearly contract.
The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0.
Assistant Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
Associate Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.

The Department of Social Sciences is the academic home to over 400 students across undergraduate degree programs in Criminal Justice; Health, Society, and Policy; Nonprofit Leadership and Administration; Political Science; Sociology; and Social Work, along with graduate programs, our MAISS and MPA degrees. Our MAISS program, with over 60 current students and 7 faculty members, is growing, and the department will be offering a PhD in Intelligence, Defense, and Cybersecurity Policy starting in Fall 2025.
The department is located on the beautiful and historic Summerville campus in a building with newly remodeled classrooms.
