Position Description

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in study design, resource management, data analytics, program and team direction. They will also have a passion for overseeing impactful, innovative research focused on suicide prevention, social determinants of mental illness from an epidemiological perspective, and overall mental health for high-risk and vulnerable populations.
Specific job duties include, but are not limited to the following core areas:  

Scientific Research Management

  • Serve as point person and Principal Investigator (PI) delegate on essential operations of the high profile STARRS/SAFEGUARD programs, including acting as main contact for all (5+) collaborating sites (government, foundation, academic), and providing a conduit to the PI to give support and guidance to teams as necessary
  • Develop strategic research plans and oversee grant-related trajectory and milestone progress; identify any gaps in completion of project goals and helps to develop action/mitigation plans to ensure goals are met
  • Prepare all program progress reports to sponsor, Government Steering Committee, and Scientific Advisory Board
  • Co-author on STARRS/SAFEGUARD and relevant publications: write sample, measures and methods sections, produce final tables and ensure accuracy of all table properties and footnotes; review all papers for accuracy and oversee literature reviews for publications
 

Team and Resource/Financial Management 

  • Directly supervise a diverse and growing team of (7) data managers, analysts, programmers and research assistants responsible for program success; proactively ensure effective workload distribution for STARRS/SAFEGUARD and in context of other programs in the portfolio
  • Develop effective recruitment strategies according to timelines and program needs, work collaboratively with Departmental administration to execute hires in accordance with approved sponsor budget
  • Oversee personnel budget (via direct report program managers as well as the Departmental grants team), review and adjust annual budgets at point of progress reports; recommend budget reductions or other changes to accommodate program needs
 

Compliance, Quality Control and Data Management 

  • Determine strategy for all structural data needs – including raw variable determinations, access requirements, training, and other administrative procedures required for project’s success
  • Oversee all quality control for programs: review code of programmers, analyze output of data quality analysis, make recommendations to PI as relevant 
  • Oversee all regulatory compliance for relevant protocols (via program managers and Office of Research Administration compliance team)
 

Depending on the evolving needs of the Kessler research program, it is expected this position may also contribute to other initiatives, especially as research funding for this area grows.  

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent work experience required      
  • Minimum of 7 years’ relevant experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Advanced degree (Master’s, PhD) in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Public Health, or a social/behavioral science strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated success and background in statistics, study design and research methods
  • Experience prioritizing multiple tasks in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Collaborative working style with demonstrated problem-solving skills  
Additional Information
This is a three-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.
