Assistant Scientist - Theoretical Physical Chemist
Argonne National Laboratory
Lemont, USA
Job posting number: #7283290 (Ref:418998)
Posted: September 28, 2024
Job Description
The Chemical Dynamics in the Gas Phase Group in the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division of Argonne National Laboratory solicits applicants to fill a staff position for an assistant chemist working in theoretical chemical physics/physical chemistry. The group currently consists of eleven staff members, with four experimentalists and seven theoreticians and modelers. The website describing the group, and its activities can be found at: https://www.anl.gov/cse/chemical-dynamics
The primary funding for the group comes from the Gas-Phase Chemical Physics Program of the DOE-Basic Energy Sciences-Chemical Sciences, Geosciences, and Biosciences Division. The program website is at: https://science.osti.gov/bes/csgb/Research-Areas/Gas-Phase-Chemical-Physics,
which includes a description of the Core Research Areas of this program. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and lead an independent research program that complements and benefits from the current activities within the group, and that fits into the context of the DOE-Gas-Phase Chemical Physics Program.
In the past, the DOE Program has focused primarily on gas-phase chemistry, but the scope of the program has broadened in recent years, and research addressing the broader Core Research Areas is strongly encouraged. The current theoretical effort within the group includes research, and proposals that makes use of large-scale DOE computing capabilities, such as the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) and Aurora, Argonne's new exascale facility.
Position Requirements
This position requires a Ph.D. degree in chemistry or a related field
Demonstrated accomplishments in creative basic research
Expertise in one or more areas of modern theoretical physical chemistry/chemical physics
An interest in probing fundamental questions in chemical reactivity
An expectation to develop an independent, innovative, and internationally recognized research program
Demonstrated ability to interact and collaborate with a diverse group of experimentalists, theorists, and modelers
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills as defined by oral presentations at scientific meetings and publications in peer-reviewed, archival, and scientific journals
Considerable general knowledge of current issues in chemical physics/physical chemistry
Applications should include the names of three references, along with a two-to-three-page description of the applicant's proposed research program that is consistent with the Group and Sponsor's interests. All applications are submitted through Argonne's online application system.
