What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you passionate about your work and dream of using your knowledge and experience in Fire Protection Engineering? If so, we are seeking a dedicated Fire Protection Engineer to join our team! This is an amazing opportunity to learn all aspects of Fire Protection Engineering!

In this role, you will work with the authority having jurisdiction for fire protection matters at Sandia. You will use engineering analyses to provide technical justifications for design decisions, fire system life cycle management, and accident analysis. Opportunities will also exist to employ the scientific method in performing fire investigations to determine origin and cause. This role will also partner with line management to develop performance-based solutions that ensure mission work aligns with the Department of Energy (DOE) fire safety objectives and the intent of fire and life-safety code requirements.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Perform fire hazards analyses for nuclear facilities in support of the Safety Basis and Documented Safety Analysis Rule processes and support performance-based designs that are a departure from the prescriptive code requirements that enable mission work while effectively protecting workers, the public, the environment, and key national assets.
  • Review and approve architectural and fire protection drawings, engineering calculations, and other design documents for new construction or modification of existing facilities.
  • Develop and implement fire prevention programs and procedures to eliminate personnel injury and minimize property damage due to fire and explosion.
  • Develop inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements for fire protection systems.
  • Perform facility and life-safety evaluations to determine fire risk and provide effective and efficient engineered solutions to mitigate risk.
  • Perform and review hydraulic calculations for determining acceptable water supply designed to meet fire suppression demands.
  • Develop emergency services baseline needs assessment to document the minimum services needed to support life safety and property protection.
  • Perform fire characterization analyses for a high volume of diverse chemical materials, enabling Research and Development organizations to maintain laboratory operations within the building safety basis envelope.
  • Participate in external industry consensus codes and standards, developing technical committees to help promote advancements in fire protection designs.
  • Research issues in such areas as fluid mechanics, fire dynamics, chemistry, hydraulics, thermodynamics, control systems, chemical kinematics, and heat transfer for metals, plastics, composite, and other structural building materials.
  • Apply research to the design, development, construction, installation, and decommissioning of electrical, mechanical, civil, structural, and architectural elements.
  • Analyze the ability of building systems and components to withstand stresses imposed by conditions such as temperature, seismic, and other natural phenomenon hazards and perform analysis of system operation to design requirements.

The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Salary Range:

$95,400 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant Engineering or Engineering Technology field plus 5 years of experience in Fire Protection; or equivalent combination of education and experience (Associate’s in above field + 9 years of experience with Federal/DOE/Industrial/Military Fire Protection Engineering experience, and NICET or NFPA (CFPS, CFPE) certifications, or 13 years of exempt level experience in previously stated field).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Bachelor’s in Fire Protection Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
  • EIT or PE license preferably in Fire Protection Engineering.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Certified Fire Protection Specialist plus a combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Understanding of applicable federal laws, regulations, building/fire codes, executive orders, and DOE Orders related to fire protection and highly protected risk concepts.
  • Understanding of intent and the independent and interdependent relationship between applicable building codes, fire codes, and national consensus codes and standards.
  • Experience using and interpreting the IBC and its referenced codes/standards (e.g.,NFPA) applicable to a diverse set of operations that include hazardous, industrial, business, assembly, and storage occupancies.
  • Knowledge of the NFPA requirements associated with inspection, maintenance and testing of fire protection systems.

About Our Team:

The Building & Fire Safety Department provides for protection of workers, the public, the environment, and property from fire and its related hazards. We apply integrated technical judgment, requiring the use of the scientific method to recognize problems, collect data through observation and research, and to engineer, innovate, and deliver fire protection solutions, enabling Sandia National Laboratories to accomplish its missions, while protecting workers, the public, the environment, and key national assets. We apply knowledge in the fundamentals of science and engineering, while demonstrating a deep understanding of engineering and scientific principles in a risk-informed, performance-based arena. Our team creates unique solutions by applying scientific and engineering methods to prevent and mitigate fire and life safety hazards in a highly regulated environment, including nuclear, accelerator, explosive, flammable liquids and solids, semi-conductor research, and test and manufacturing facilities. We see computational fire dynamic modeling simulation and analysis to evaluate and develop performance-based solutions in areas not addressed by the prescriptive industry consensus codes.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
