Position Description
The Merkenschlager laboratory at Harvard Medical School seeks a highly motivated, responsible, and reliable individual to act as a laboratory manager and to support research on how cells of the immune system interact to control the immune response. This individual, under minimal direction, will perform and/or coordinate a wide range of laboratory research procedures as well as administrative tasks.
Laboratory duties include standard cell and molecular biology experiments, animal (mouse) husbandry and genotyping, aiding in tissue and cell preparations, bacterial cultures and infections, B cell receptor and antibody cloning, protein and RNA isolation and analysis, immunofluorescence microscopy, and flow cytometry. Other lab techniques may be introduced during the course of the research.
Laboratory management duties include ordering and receiving lab supplies, organizing lab meetings and events, managing lab credit card purchases, coordinating and overseeing all general lab consumables, ensuring that all phases of the day-to-day laboratory work comply with relevant regulations and policies, research protocols, health and safety policies at HMS, purchasing and testing new lab equipment and monitoring and maintaining all current lab equipment, overseeing the management of the laboratory’s mouse colony, helping the faculty member with laboratory protocols and SOPs, acting as one of the lab’s emergency contacts in case of equipment or building failures, processing invoices for the lab, and overseeing the correct disposal of biological and chemical waste.
Experience in any/all of these is advantageous, but not required, as training will be provided. Experience with antibody production and cell culture techniques is a plus. Candidate must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be willing to work with mice in a research setting.
Basic Qualifications
College background and at least 1-2+ years of relevant experience. Relevant coursework may count toward experience.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field preferred; previous work with laboratory mice is advantageous.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
Additional Information
This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position
