Job Description
Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a candidate for the position of ATLAS cryogenic technician. This position is responsible for conducting the operation, maintenance and upgrading of the ATLAS helium and nitrogen cryogenic systems. The individual will be responsible for independently diagnosing and troubleshooting routine problems affecting cryogenic system performance and assist in analyzing and finding resolutions to more complex problems. The individual will participate in the development of detailed work plans for the maintenance, operation, and technical improvement to the cryogenics systems. The individual in this role is responsible for overseeing and performing the implementation of these work plans and is also expected to train accelerator operations staff and technicians, as necessary.
In this position, you will:
Support daily operations of the ATLAS cryogenic systems
Perform hands-on periodic inspection and maintenance of pressure, cryogenic, vacuum, and supporting utilities
Install or replace equipment to optimize system performance and reliability
Measure, record, and document operating performance data
Be available to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day when scheduled
Position Requirements
- 3+ years of hands-on fluid mechanics or industrial HVAC experience
- Successful track record of implementing, recording and documenting system performance
- Ability to communicate with scientific and technical staff
- 3+ years of work experience demonstrating high mechanical aptitude
- Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
Preferred experience:
- +2 years of LHe and LN2 hands-on experience
- Associate's degree in engineering
- +2 years of vacuum experience
- Experience working with minimal supervision on complex projects
At the RD1 level candidate will have: High School or Associates + 1-3 years experience or equivalent.
At the RD2 level candidate will have: Associates + 5 years experience or equivalent.
