Job Description: We are seeking a Safety Generalist to join our Deployed Safety Team. This role offers the opportunity to actively contribute to our mission of ensuring a safe and compliant work environment within the Laboratory.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a vital member of the Laboratory’s deployed safety team, acting as a two-way communicator between Laboratory health, safety, and environmental programs and the deployed Division(s).
  • Collaborate with line management, researchers, and workers to tailor the execution of safety programs and address area-specific safety needs in deployed Divisions.
  • Provide support in work planning activities and act as a local safety professional resource, offering practical implementation solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with Argonne’s environmental, safety, and health (ESH) policies, DOE orders, and OSHA regulations by offering coordination, guidance, and support.
  • Conduct walkthroughs, reviews, and consultations of experimental/project plans, operating procedures, and job safety analyses with input from mentors and subject matter experts.
  • Coordinate and monitor safety activities as part of a collaborative safety team.
  • Contribute to the Directorate’s ESH/QA team in various functional roles, acting semi-independently under the guidance of an experienced peer.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in physical science, engineering, occupational health & safety, environmental engineering, or a related field. A degree in Occupational Health & Safety is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory, experimental, and/or industrial facilities and familiarity with supporting facility operations.
  • Willingness to explore innovative methods for risk reduction, with guidance from specialists and mentors.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with scientists, support staff, and occasionally management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team, respecting and valuing varied perspectives.
  • Ability to quickly learn and use safety-related Argonne web applications and common productivity software.
  • Commitment to acquiring technical expertise and understanding the operational and safety challenges within the deployed Division(s).
  • Ability to recognize when additional specialist knowledge is needed and to involve relevant experts as necessary.
  • Commitment to providing timely and effective customer service, including a willingness to engage directly at the customer work location.
  • Ability to model and uphold Argonne’s core values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Initiative toward certification in the ESH career field is encouraged.
  • A proactive approach to learning and professional development, particularly in acquiring competencies relevant to OSHA disciplines.
