Job Description
Summary
The Center for Comparative Medicine provides for the care, health and well-being of all research animals used in the pursuit of scientific achievement and excellence at Baylor College of Medicine. CCM provides the highest quality veterinary and animal care and acts as a resource for the faculty on veterinary and scientific issues relating to the use of laboratory animals. Under general supervision, this position is responsible for providing skilled husbandry for a diverse group of research animals according to established procedures and standards. Primary working areas may include specialized areas such as USDA covered species, biohazard areas, and animal colonies requiring specialized procedures.Alternating weekend and holiday work is required. Persons in this position are considered essential when the College declares an emergency or campus closure and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by their direct supervisor.
Job Duties
- Provides daily husbandry of laboratory animals to include: observation of animals, handling, and restraint, feeding and watering, changing cages/racks, and sanitizing animal quarters and equipment in compliance with Federal regulations, AALAC standards and CCM policy.
- Provides routine care and handling of USDA covered species and other animals that require specialized expertise in a safe and sanitary manner.
- Handles and transports animals and bedding material.
- Identifies and reports animal health concerns via electronic medical record system.
- Reviews, understands and complies with all relevant standard operation procedures and established quality assurance standards pertaining to the specific work or task area.
- Oversees work areas to ensure task completion. Reviews completion of procedures, verification of logs, equipment function and accuracy of census.
- Provides guidance and training of Animal Care Attendants.
- Recognizes and troubleshoots minor husbandry related needs.
- Performs weaning and sexing of rodents.
- Ensures entry level employees\' work is complete and accurate.
- Tracks and enters husbandry related charges.
- Demonstrates BCM core values: Respect, Integrity, Innovation, Teamwork, and Excellence.
- Signs multiple husbandry logs.
- Transfers animals between rooms and facilities in accordance to facility regulations.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- One year of relevant experience.
- Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
