Job Description
Argonne National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory near Chicago, Illinois, seeks an Assistant Climate Scientist for its Environmental Science Division (EVS).
Assistant Climate Scientist will lead two ongoing projects: continental-scale convection-resolving climate downscaling and model validation, and extreme weather-induced risks for offshore wind energy. This role involves applying atmospheric modeling and atmosphere-ocean coupling for multi-decadal simulations on leading High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms at Argonne and other DOE sites.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead projects focused on earth system science and climate research, providing technical expertise and support for HPC-related computational challenges.
- Develop, evaluate, and apply analytical approaches, synthesis activities, and computational tools.
- Present research findings through reports and presentations to sponsors and peer reviewed journal articles.
- Collaborate with a team of scientists on modeling and evaluating climate-related risks at local and regional scales.
Position Requirements
- RD2: Completed Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences or a related field.
- Expertise in using HPC systems for large-scale numerical simulations.
- Strong knowledge of regional climate models, particularly the WRF model and atmosphere-ocean-wave coupled models.
- Proficiency in technical writing and effective communication.
- Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills.
- Extensive understanding of atmospheric physics, process-scale models, and numerical computation techniques, along with experience in data visualization and analysis.
- Leadership experience in advising students and postdocs.
- Ability to model to Argonne’s core values: impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
