Job Description
The X-ray Science Division (XSD) of Argonne National Laboratory enables world-class research using x-rays by operating beamlines with novel capabilities, developing cutting edge instrumentation and techniques, and pursuing research in the physical, chemical, environmental, life, and materials sciences. The XSD Microscopy Group is seeking a scientific associate to provide technical and operation support to the group.
The successful candidate will:
Provide mechanical, electronic, controls, and software support for beamline operation and development.
Develop technical design and plans, coordinate assembly and testing of components and systems, diagnose problems and repairs equipment as needed.
Work with teams of scientific and engineering staff on installation and commissioning of new beamline components, as well as development and operation of advanced instrumentation.
Act as the primary technical interface with other APS engineering and support groups.
Position Requirements
Experience in design, development, support, and operation of complex advanced instrumentation in a scientific user environment.
Knowledge of equipment and techniques for maintenance and diagnostics relating to beamline operations, motion control, custom electronics, and computer systems.
Skills in troubleshooting, diagnostics, and independent judgments in solving technical problems.
Skills in team working environments with scientific, engineering, and support staffs.
Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
Ability to understand, value, and promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
Preferred Requirements
Knowledge of Linux based operating systems, python scripting, and EPICS
Knowledge of mechanical designs, vacuum technology, encoded motion controls, advanced electronic, and/or computer control systems
This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD1 or RD2) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements of the two levels are as follows:
RD1: Bachelors and 0+ years’ experience, Masters and 0+ years’ experience, or equivalent
RD2: Bachelors and 5+ years’ experience, Masters and 3+ years’ experience, PhD and 0+ years’ experience, or equivalent
