Job Description
Support the design and implementation of projects for the Battery Workforce Challenge (BWC) competition as a core engineering organizer on the Operations Steering Committee (OSC). Provide subject matter expertise in battery pack level software and project management to be applied to student-facing activities. Lead the process for teams to meet milestones focused on battery design, simulation, controls development, testing, and vehicle integration and demonstration. Assist in planning and executing BWC competition workshops and competition events, including the development and delivery of technical training content. Manage change control and release of various BWC documents to teams and sponsors while maintaining a high level of quality. Coordinate the BWC Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) program and serve as a key mentor and point of contact with BWC GRAs. Assist with internal operations and project management to ensure the successful planning and execution of the program.
Support the design and implementation of projects within the BWC competition from initiation through execution, per requirements defined by the U.S. Department of Energy, competition-level sponsors, and institutional stakeholders.
Serve as a core member of the OSC, providing general engineering guidance, particularly in the area of Pack level software.
Utilize your subject matter expertise to design and implement core principles of software engineering into the student training curriculum and vehicle development process, as well as your mentorship and guidance to ensure students develop core competencies in this area.
Support other technical activities within the BWC program. Assignments will be based on the candidate's skill set, program needs, and the collective skill set of other Argonne staff supporting the program. Technical areas may include developing presentations for year-end competitions, defining vehicle design process activities for BWC teams, and developing vehicle test events for BWC teams.
Provide in-person support for BWC events, including on-site support and coordination with internal and external technical and logistics personnel to develop and maintain training and event schedules.
Provide internal project management support for the operations of the BWC program, including release management and change control of key technical documentation, developing and maintaining file-sharing platforms, and managing GRA funding applications.
Continue to gain knowledge in transportation, advanced mobility, and project management, particularly regarding advanced vehicle technologies. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging trends in the automotive industry and its interaction with DOE and other government agencies.
Perform other administrative duties as assigned according to the needs of the BWC program.
Publish papers and give technical presentations at workshops and conferences.
Travel: Approximately 25%.
Position Requirements
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering.
Prior exposure to an engineering / Technical role.
Automotive industry experience with vehicle or Battery Pack systems.
Knowledge of battery electric vehicle (BEV) technologies and emerging trends in the automotive industry.
Demonstrated attention to detail and high standards for quality in personal work habits.
Knowledge of or experience with Project Management principles and concepts.
Mastery of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Expertise in written communication, particularly technical writing.
Skill in technical presentations and oral communications.
Skill in time management, organization, self-direction, and working on several projects simultaneously.
Skill in inter-organization collaboration and multi-disciplinary teamwork.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD1 or RD2) depending upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and experience brought to the position. The requirements for the desired levels are as follows:
RD1: Bachelor’s and 0 years or Master’s and 0 years.
RD2: Bachelor’s and 5+ years, or Master’s and 3+ years, or Doctorate and 0 years.
Travel Requirement: Approximately 25%
Hybrid Schedule– This position requires a hybrid schedule, blending on-site and remote work; on-site presence will be required at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois 2-3 days each week.
