Job Description

The Strategic Security Sciences Division at Argonne National Laboratory researches, develops, and implements practical approaches and technical solutions to address complex and enduring threats to national and global security. In our work on Nonproliferation missions, we combine technical expertise in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) science and engineering with specialized knowledge of nonproliferation policies and programs to develop practical approaches and technical solutions to achieve nonproliferation objectives.

The Nuclear Nonproliferation Specialist will provide technical and policy expertise to Division programs in areas related to nuclear security and nonproliferation of nuclear and nuclear-related technologies.The selected candidate will: Conduct research of nuclear engineering technology and techniques working with a range of activities (e.g., pyroprocessing, radiological security, safeguards, material accountability, etc.) spanning technical and policy subject matter areas; Prepare and contribute to technical analyses and reports on technologies and activities of proliferation and security concern such as proliferation potential of nuclear fuel cycle facilities and international transfers of certain materials, equipment, and technologies;Provide project management and technical expertise in support of programs and projects associated with CBRN nonproliferation, including trainings/meetings and development of nonproliferation tools and resources; and work with principal investigators for selected projects, writing proposals and over time being to lead work under the purview of National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Energy and other federal sponsors.

Position Requirements

  • Knowledge of science and engineering principles associated with the nuclear fuel cycle, radiological security, or related technical areas. This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal educationin nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry and/or physics.

  • Familiarity with U.S. and international nonproliferation, export control policies and regimes, and/or nuclear safeguards policies and regimes.

  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills to effectively communicate and collaborate with a diverse range of people and job functions.

  • Skill in organizational and time management, with careful attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple stakeholders and priorities and experience working independently under time constraints to meet critical deadlines.

  • Interested candidates must have a solid technical background in a relevant field and a strong desire to apply that background to nonproliferation and national security policy support.

This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD2 or RD3) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements of the two levels are as follows:

  • RD2: Bachelors and 5+ years’ experience, Masters and 3+ years’ experience, PhD and 0+ years’ experience, or equivalent

  • RD3: Bachelors and 8+ years’ experience, Masters and 5+ years’ experience, PhD and 4+ years’ experience, or equivalent
