Job Description

Summary

The lab is seeking a highly motivated Research Technician II to work for two faculty members at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute. The lab is using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing tools in stem cell derived neurons to study the molecular mechanisms of neurodevelopmental diseases, such as autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability. Stem cells require frequent technical work that includes cell passaging, maintenance, and differentiation. The technician will receive training in stem cell culturing and maintenance, and will be responsible for maintaining stem cell cultures, molecular cloning, and preparing and ordering reagents. Adaptability in work schedule is important for stem cell work, which frequently requires weekend engagement to feed cells. However, scheduling during the week will be highly flexible.

Job Duties

  • Performs technical stem cell work that includes cell passaging, maintenance, and differentiation according to established protocols.
  • Performs CRISPR-based genome editing using established protocols.
  • Performs molecular cloning and genomics procedures as needed (i.e., DNA/RNA extraction, plasmid preparation, quantitative PCR, lentiviral preparation)
  • Helps in ordering and preparing reagents.
  • Maintains stem cell cultures and performs molecular cloning.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of related work experience (relevant coursework may count toward this experience).
  • Experience in molecular cloning techniques, quantitative PCR (qPCR), western blotting, and immunofluorescence.
  • Experience in cell culture work would be helpful.
  • Good Interpersonal, verbal, and communication skills.
