Job Description

The Nanoscience and Technology Division/Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM) at Argonne National Laboratory has an Assistant Scientist (Quantum Information Science/Nanofabrication) position opening within the Nanofabrication and Devices Group (NFD), funded through the CNM program. The CNM is a DOE Office of Science user facility that provides researchers from across the globe with world-class expertise and instrumentation for multidisciplinary nanoscience and nanotechnology research.

The candidate will be responsible for developing a world-class quantum information science program as well as supporting users with existing infrastructure and facilities available at CNM. This program will leverage CNM’s Quantum Matter and Devices Lab, which is equipped with a Dilution Refrigerator (DR) system for ultralow-temperature experiments down to 10 mK and an Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator (ADR) system that can offer fast cooldown cycles down to <100 mK. Both systems are equipped with full sets of DC, RF, and fiber-optic lines for a great variety of electrical, microwave, and optical quantum experiments and material characterizations. In addition, the DR features several unique capabilities including a 5-1-1T vector magnet, 5-way free-space optical access, and an expedited sample loader that can significantly shorten cooldown time and expedite experiment throughput. The advanced cleanroom facility at CNM is equipped with several state-of-the-art nanofabrication tools that allows fabrication of quantum devices.

The successful candidate will work with a dynamic team of scientists and engineers with diverse expertise in quantum science, synthesis, processing of materials and nanofabrication as well as users from universities, national labs and industry. The candidate will primarily work in the cleanroom/Quantum labs and will be expected to develop a strong research program by actively participating in CNM’s five strategic scientific theme areas with a particular focus on quantum science (https://cnm.anl.gov/pages/quantum-coherence) to discover fundamental mechanisms, novel materials and innovative system design for transformative insight and impact on quantum information science.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Work with CNM staff (both experimental and theory staff) and other Argonne divisions and centers (such as Q-NEXT) in developing new research programs supporting CNM’s strategic scientific theme areas.
  • Work with NFD group members in maintaining and smooth operation of CNM Quantum Labs as well as supporting user work in the cleanroom.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. in physical sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or Electrical Engineering) or related field awarded preferably within the last 5 years or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by the commencement of employment.
  • Strong experience in nanofabrication (cleanroom), including lithography (electron-beam lithography and photolithography), material deposition, etching, etc
  • Strong experience in characterization of materials, fabrication of devices and quantum measurements.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Interested candidates should apply through Workday via the Argonne site. Applications must include:

  • Cover letter; detailing how your experience and expertise will contribute to success in this position.
  • Detailed curriculum vitae including a list of publications and the names and addresses of three professional references.
  • 2-page statement on proposed research.
  • 1-page statement regarding an approach to engage and grow the scientific user program.
  • 1-page diversity-equity-inclusionstrategy.
