What Your Job Will Be Like:

Organization 05442, Navigation Guidance & Control (NGC), is currently seeking a Hypersonic Flight Software Engineer to join their team.

The selected candidate will contribute to embedded flight software for hypersonic flight system applications with over a decade of successful flight test pedigree. Integration and demonstration of emerging technologies into the next generation of hypersonic strike systems is required to support our Nation's objectives for the future battlespace. Efforts will focus on embedded software development and test activities enabling the integration of new capabilities, algorithms, and avionics devices. The DevOps culture of Organization 05442 enables staff to contribute to all areas of software design, development, test, and analysis.

Successful candidates will collaborate with other NGC organizations who focus on low-to-mid Technology Readiness Level (TRL) technologies. These organizations are managed as a team and the unified goal is to mature NGC technologies from concepts to an integrated flight system for the warfighter. One has opportunities as an R&D Computer Engineer to contribute at each TRL as technologies are matured with the final system application in mind.

On any given day, one may be called upon to:

  • Implement the software development lifecycle process for Sandia's flight software contributions
  • Develop embedded software for highly reliable real-time flight systems
  • Write and test device drivers for real-time operating systems to enable integration of new avionics components
  • Assist with software development associated with software test fixtures such as Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) test assets
  • Support system-level hardware testing including participation on-console with Assembly, Integration, and Test teams
  • Architect and implement software test methodologies
  • Contribute to software architecture design and development
  • Coordinate and collaborate with external program partners to meet program-level objectives and achievements

Periodic travel may be required to support system-level integration testing and flight test activities. Trip durations can range from a few days to several weeks, depending on assigned roles and responsibilities.

Salary Range:

Qualifications We Desire:

Ideally, we would like to see your background include some of the following:

  • A Bachelor’s degree and advance degree (Master's or PhD) in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering field
  • Experience in embedded software development at the application layer
  • Experience developing for real-time operating systems
  • Experience with real-time embedded software engineering at the hardware level, including I/O driver software, interrupt service routines, and networking protocols
  • Familiarity with the Greenhills INTEGRITY® Real-time Operating System
  • Lab experience with use of common digital debugging tools (e.g. oscilloscopes, logic probes, and logic analyzers)
  • The ability to collaborate and contribute as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • An active DOE Q-level security clearance; or other equivalent active security clearance such as DOD Top Secret

About Our Team:

The Navigation, Guidance, & Control (NGC) Department (05442) develops and delivers integrated, system-level NGC solutions for the hypersonic strike domain space, enabled by embedded software development and test for real-time applications. Our multi-disciplinary team establishes confidence in our software products through high fidelity six degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) dynamic modeling & simulation (MODSIM), Continuous Integration & Continuous Deployment (CI/CD), Software-in-the-Loop (SWIL) testing, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) testing, and integrated system testing. We work closely with sibling departments to mature emerging NGC technologies and verify weapon system integration compatibility. Sponsored by the Department of Defense, we team with industry throughout the development cycle which ultimately culminates in high consequence flight test demonstrations. We take pride in our reputation for delivering robust, high-performance hypersonic flight control solutions to enable an operational hypersonic strike capability for the warfighter.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
