What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking two R&D managers who are enthusiastic and motivated leaders. The successful candidates will join our Stockpile Engineering and ND Product Realization Team (Group 2210); the first position is for Department 2218, W88 ALT370 Product Realization, and the second is for Department 2217, Stockpile Logistics Systems.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Lead technical teams of engineers and technologists to assure technical and project management excellence.
  • Collaborate closely with NM and CA Systems Managers to provide integrated stockpile leadership and strategic vision for the Laboratories.
  • The technical manager will be expected to develop a broad understanding of the components, subsystems, and weapon systems we deliver.
  • Partner and develop strong trust-based relationships with customers and stakeholders.
  • Champion a culture of diversity, equality and inclusion and take an active leadership role in modeling and growing these values.
  • Use your technical and mission experience to help guide and represent the responsible ND mission areas.
  • Coordinate across multiple teams throughout the Laboratory.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Albuquerque, NM. Some travel is required for this position.

Salary Range:

$149,700 - $254,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a relevant STEM field, plus four (4) years of relevant experience; OR Bachelor's degree in stated field, plus eight (8) years of relevant experience.
  • Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent (DoD Top Secret clearance).
  • Management experience (including Acting Manager) in an R&D organization and/or Nuclear Deterrence Systems technical leadership experience.
  • Experience working in an operational environment related to safety and security with an understanding of Sandia policies related to work planning & controls.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Two (2) years of demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Experience with weapon development and qualification activities with internal and/or external customers and stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) and customer interface experience.
  • R&D experience in a Nuclear Deterrence discipline area including Nuclear Deterrence Systems and/or Components.
  • R&D experience in systems and/or component analysis, product design/development/production, stockpile evaluation, experimental and/or modeling & simulation, materials analysis, or other activities applied to nuclear weapons.
  • Experience and success in recruiting, hiring, mentoring and leading technical staff.

About Our Team:

Group 2210 (Stockpile Engineering and ND Product Realization) is a diverse group integrating and supporting the ND programs. Our team supports the entire life cycle for ND programs and has a large integration role both internal to Sandia and with our customers and stakeholders external to Sandia.

Department 2218 mission is to realize the W88 ALT370 Scope for the W88 System. Responsibilities include all aspects of systems engineering to ensure these weapon systems remain safe, secure, and reliable as they are entered to the stockpile and supporting efforts for sustainment of the program: project management, risk identification, resolution and mitigation of production anomalies are primary focus areas. The team provides the systems engineering support for the ALT370 and is the direct interface to the customer and partner sites as the System Integrator.

Department 2217 mission is to Realize the W76-1/-2 ALT939 and W88 ALT940 ISA Scope. Responsibilities include all aspects of systems engineering, encompassing planning and execution of all qualification activities including test and modeling & simulation and ensuring the weapon systems remain safe, secure, and reliable as they are entered into service. The team provides the systems engineering expertise and support for the ALT939 and ALT940 and is the direct interface to the customer and partner sites as the System Integrator. The department is also responsible for leading transportation integration efforts with Over-the-Road (OTR) partners.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
