What Your Job Will Be Like:
The Advanced Science and Technology Division (Division 1000) has an opening for a Senior Manager to lead Sandia’s newly created Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation (CAMINO). CAMINO is currently in a bridge phase using existing and newly leased facilities, together with partner facilities at the Kansas City National Security Campus. Beyond the bridge phase, CAMINO will be headquartered off-site, serving as an advanced manufacturing hub near Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. CAMINO’s mission is as an outward-facing Advanced Manufacturing (AdM) institute providing DOE/NNSA and broader national security missions at Sandia access to state-of-the-art advanced manufacturing capabilities (subject matter experts, tools, technology base) as well as a collaboration space to accelerate transitioning designs from prototype to qualification. CAMINO’s facilities and work structure will enable the collocation of government, industry, and academic partners and will accommodate classified work. The fundamental building blocks (technical thrust areas) for CAMINO include advanced manufacturing technologies, digital engineering, agile product development, systems integration, and technology transfer in support of current and future national-security mission priorities. CAMINO will leverage Sandia’s extensive expertise in materials and engineering sciences, modeling and simulation, artificial intelligence, characterization as well as unique testing and evaluation. Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:
- Provide leadership for, mentor, and manage a group which initially includes a chief engineer, L1 manager, and matrixed business development and support staff
- Deliver value, through our investments in AdM, to customers internal to Sandia, across the Nuclear Security Enterprise, and to our Strategic Partnership Programs.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for laboratory leadership groups, institute councils, internal stakeholders, advisory SMEs, and technical thrust leads
- Lead a operation that includes matrixed MOWs with diverse technical backgrounds (materials science, engineering, computer and computational science, data science) and distributed laboratory line and support organizations that own or oversee facilities, operations, and ES&H
- Develop and maintain relationships with sponsors and partners (government, industry, academia)
- Lead program development efforts to enable a sustainable business model
- Develop strategic vision to ensure scientific and technical direction are aligned with Sandia’s National Security Missions
- Provide periodic updates on impact and direction to Sandia and DOE leadership
- Work with internal and external partners to realize and then instantiate permanent CAMINO facilities
- Ensure a culture built on innovation, but with critical thinking that promotes safety and security.
- Encourage a diverse and inclusive work environment
- Work closely with the director stakeholder council and SNL Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to develop business opportunities for CAMINO that help to ensure its success
- Travel as needed to support the AdM needs of the customer (DOE/NNSA and broader DOE, other agencies, private sector, academic partners, and SNL production partners)
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
$175,100 - $297,800
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- MS or PhD in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field plus 10 or more years of relevant experience
- Experience of advanced materials and manufacturing processes
- Track record in business development and proficiency developing technology partnerships and commercialization

- Demonstrated experience in planning and standing up a new program or organization
- Demonstrated scientific and engineering impact that includes recognition as leader in multiple science and technical societies
- International reputation demonstrated through serving on government, academic or industry advisory boards
- Experience conducting and/or managing hazardous activities and assuring safety in laboratory settings
- A network of contacts encompassing Sandia's diverse technical base, universities, and government labs
- A dedication to inclusion of diverse backgrounds with the ability to build and inclusively lead multidisciplinary teams
- Knowledge of one or more of Sandia’s key missions
About Our Team:
The vision for CAMINO 1010 at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) was seeded more than two years ago when SNL senior leadership realized that a more formal, consolidated, and purposeful approach to advanced manufacturing (AdM) was needed and long overdue. The science, engineering, and economic return on investment for AdM is irrefutable at SNL and for the overall manufacturing community at large. This is evidenced in part by SNL’s long history in advanced materials and additive manufacturing, constituted formally over 30 years ago with the establishment of the Advanced Materials Laboratory (AML) in the Materials, Physical, and Chemical Sciences Center (Center 1800) in 1992. Of course, Sandia has a long history as a design and production agency that is broad and deep for national security products that pre-dates the AML. While numerous R&D staff across all the SNL mission organizations are actively engaged in successful AdM product development and realization for key US Department of Energy (DOE) missions such as the DOE National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Nuclear Deterrence (ND) program, the overall AdM efforts at SNL will benefit from greater coordination, integration, and sharing of best practices and lessons learned. The next step for CAMINO (as a direct follow-on to the AML) is to embody its scope and mission within a formal matrixed institute to bring about much-needed synergy both within SNL as well as with other key external stakeholder and sponsoring organizations and agencies. CAMINO represents one of SNL’s highest priorities, hence the Senior Manager leading the CAMINO Institute will report directly to the Associate Laboratories Director (ALD) of SNL’s Advanced Science and Technology (AS&T) Division. The AS&T ALD also serves as SNL Chief Research Officer (CRO).Advanced manufacturing for the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) and Sandia’s Strategic Partnership Programs has an enormous upside: it offers the potential for extraordinary agility but also will help combat shrinking development and production schedules, supply chain issues and regulatory constraints, and reliance on sunset technologies. CAMINO is planned to be largely an off-site facility (relative to SNL residence on the Kirtland Air Force Base), with coordinated classified space through our partners, for rapid development, maturation, and qualification of materials to components, a capability for the NSE to enable research flexibility (low TRL) with production rigor (high MRL), a hub and accelerator for national security applications, and a philosophy and workflow to “answer the call”. The vision for CAMINO is broad and impactful, namely that it will be a national resource for specialized advanced manufacturing capabilities, novel materials design and engineering, mission focused prototyping, and product realization accelerator. CAMINO’s sustained success and relevance will rely heavily on key mutually beneficial relationships with the DOE NNSA’s Design and Production Agencies. As an off-site facility, CAMINO must provide leading-edge R&D capabilities, rapid prototyping capabilities to the component level, support early collaborative relationships, be a physical home for vertical integration, provide rapid design/build/test iteration, and provide focus for multi-institutional collocation and coordination.
Posting Duration:
This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
