A respiratory therapist assists in the treatment and management of patients with pulmonary disorders. They collect and analyze sputum, blood, and breathing specimens to determine the levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases. They administer treatments prescribed by a physician for patients with breathing abnormalities and perform technical tasks related to respiratory therapy procedures and protocols. They also interact with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate and promote optimal patient care.

As a successful candidate, you will:

  • Sets up equipment and medications and administers respiratory treatment as ordered by the physician; charts treatment, response, and progress.
  • Observes patients, checks equipment, and makes changes as necessary during patient rounds.
  • Records observations and services and completes patient records.
  • Responds and assists with basic life support in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation emergencies.
  • Participates in fire, safety and other training programs conducted within and outside of the medical center. Maintains current CPR card.
  • Performs EKGs and arterial blood gases.
  • Maintains established department policies, procedures, objectives, and quality assurance, safety.
  • Assesses and documents patients’ condition on ventilators to include ETT tube placement, cuff pressure (if appropriate), breath sounds, respiratory effort, color and any noted treads in secretion, pressures, etc.
  • Assesses and documents patients who are receiving respiratory treatments prior to and after treatment.
  • Assesses and provides patient and family education for every patient who received initial treatment, 02 therapy, procedure, or placed on ventilator. Evaluates patient’s or family members’ responses on the new interdisciplinary patient and family education flow sheet.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, workshops, and Inservice meetings, etc.
  • Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies. Ensure supplies are ordered timely. Report any equipment malfunction, ensure equipment is tagged and out of service till repaired.
  • Teach one education offering yearly to own department or with in organization.
  • Involved in one performance process within department to improve outcomes.
  • Assist with scheduling staff or coverage for sick calls.
  • Help and support role out of new technology or workflow processes.

Your qualifications should include:

Minimum Education:

  • As required for certification and licensure

Minimum Experience:

  • 5 years of Respiratory Therapist experience.

Req. Certification/Licensure:

  • California Respiratory Care Practitioner license (RCP)
  • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT)
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) American Heart Association

Salary / Pay Rate Information:
Pay Rate: $41.05 - $61.58 / hour

The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
